A look at how one individual can draw on different sorts of support at BSRC

The Bristol Somali Resource Centre has helped many thousands of people since its opening in 2006. We provide many kinds of support, including help with learning English, getting employment and physical/mental health. In fact, many individuals come to us needing several different kinds of the help our staff specialise in. Here is one example giving an idea of the breadth of our work.

When we first met Miss L, a teenage student who had recently moved from Ethiopia, she was struggling to get her college assignments done and was falling behind. It turned out that she was having to write long essays on an old phone. However, BSRC was able to supply her with a newly refurbished laptop from our partner charity, DigiLocal, allowing her to write, edit and format her documents on a properly-sized screen.

While still at college, Miss L was keen to find a job. Our employability advisor helped her make a CV and gave her regular guidance on looking, applying and interviewing for jobs. Miss L was then able to use her laptop to do all this by herself and very soon had landed a job she enjoys.

The laptop also came handy recently when she was looking to move out of the family home and find her own place. With guidance from a BSRC advisor specialising in housing, Miss L is now enjoying life as an independent adult, having found her first rented property through a housing association.
