What We Do

Youth Services

About this service

After years with little local provision for young people, Barton Hill is now home to The Swannery youth centre, directly below the BSRC offices. In partnership with the Wellspring Settlement, BSRC lead several youth activity sessions every week, for boys and girls of all ages. In addition to these sessions, our youth worker provides one-to-one mentoring to secondary-age pupils. Most had been referred by their schools, who had identified them as in need of extra guidance. Our youth worker also spends three hours each week in detached work, speaking to young people on the streets, hearing their concerns and inviting them to get involved.

We aim to improve the economic prospects of the younger generation by running enriching and skills-building activities for local youth and helping young people make informed choices about their education. We advocate on behalf of pupils at risk of exclusion or expulsion, and help by mediating between families and schools where needed. We help parents find places at the most suitable local schools for their children, guide them through the complexities of the education system and help ease communication between parents and schools.
